The Douglass Theatre's BHM FILM SERIES is an annual curated selection of film screenings that encompasses inspiring cinematic treasures, past and current, that illustrate a piece of Black History and African American storytelling that are entertaining and enlightening. From documentaries to action stories, the film series is one that inspires. It is sponsored by Cox Communications.

FEB 13: Waiting to Exhale (1995). Follows four Black women in Phoenix navigating love, life, and careers, based on Terry McMillians novel. The film celebrated its 30 year box office success in December and will include a Waiting to Exhale Reunion w/a Talk Back for this FILM Series.
FEB 20: Stomp the Yard (2007). When his brother is murdered, a street dancer moves to Georgia to work his way through college to further his education and earn his degree. He joins a fraternity's step dancing team for a competition, which open his eyes and heart to a new brotherhood. This movie will be celebrated with the the theatre's 105th year celebration entitled Homecoming Week and will include a mixer, kickback, and game night in partnership the Divine 9 Fraternities and Sororities.
FEB 27: Fannie Lou Hamer's America (2022). An original documentary told through the public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs of the fearless Mississippi civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer. Known for being "sick and tired of being sick and tired" the archive footage in this documentary is often accompanied by Fannie Lou Hamer singing her own songs and her impassioned pleas for equal rights. This film will also include a talk back panel.
